What happened to Dragon on Mac?

Nuance discontinued Dragon for Mac in October 2018. The last version — Dragon Professional Individual for Mac 6 — stopped receiving updates and is incompatible with modern macOS releases.

In 2022, Microsoft acquired Nuance. Dragon NaturallySpeaking continues on Windows, but there are no plans to bring it back to Mac. Mac users who relied on Dragon need a modern alternative.

The pricing gap

Dragon was a $300–$500 upfront purchase with no trial. Upgrades cost extra. And when Nuance pulled the plug on Mac, that investment was gone.

Dicta is $5.90/month or $29/year, with a 7-day free trial and no credit card required. Cancel anytime — no lock-in, no sunk costs.

Privacy: then and now

Dragon

  • Audio processed on Nuance servers
  • Required internet connection
  • Data subject to Nuance privacy policy
  • Now under Microsoft ownership

Your voice data went through cloud servers you didn't control.

Dicta

  • Audio stays on your Mac
  • All processing on your Mac
  • Nothing to encrypt — nothing leaves
  • Works fully offline

Your voice never leaves your device. There's nothing to hack, leak, or subpoena.

Is Dicta the right Dragon replacement?

Dicta is a good fit if:

  • You used Dragon for Mac and need a replacement
  • Privacy matters — you want on-device processing
  • You want verbatim transcription, not AI rewrites
  • You prefer a low monthly price over a big upfront buy
  • You use AI tools (Cursor, Claude, ChatGPT) and want faster input

Dicta may not be right if:

  • You need Windows support (Dicta is Mac-only)
  • You need voice commands to control apps (Dicta is text input only)
  • You need medical/legal vocabulary packs
